About Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES)
TIES- where you can learn to live with nature
Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) is a not for profit research organisation established by a group of experts from education, conservation and management background with an aim to connect people with nature through education, outreach, research and grassroot-level intervention. It is a Research centre affiliated with the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and a partner of district and state administration in various government projects. TIES was selected as a “Centre for Excellence” for conducting eco-projects by the state government in the year of 2012. TIES bagged several awards including Green Institution Award (2011); Skal International Tourism Award for Naalumanikkaattu project (2014); Vanamithra Award (2018), Paristhithi Mithra award (2019) etc.
TIES is an approved water testing laboratory under the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB); supporting agency for Jalanidhi (KWRSA) & service provider for Suchithwa Mission, Kerala.
TIES is a research partner of various Government departments and agencies for several projects since 2006. TIES is the leading corporate partner in India for conducting Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects and implementing environmental projects of Apollo Tyres; Tata Chemicals Ltd.; Hindustan Uniliver Ltd., Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, etc.
Energy and water conservation, waste management, natural resource management, natural and organic farming and wildlife conservation are the major fields of specialization of TIES.
The organization promotes green livelihoods and lifestyle as part of its projects & programmes in the region. Various initiatives such as mushroom farming, apiculture, home waste management, organic and balcony/terrace farming, fish culture, poultry farming at home, and home waste management are being conducted in association with corporate CSR initiatives, Resident Welfare Associations and government agencies. The institute conducts training workshops, supplies start up kits and technical assistance.
TIES Online Classroom
TIES provide online cum interactive training sessions for the community. All the classes are on themes which will help families to live an eco-friendly life by generating good food, water and air in their home through small scale farming, waste management and energy & water conservation practices. All classes mainly target people with busy schedule and limited space in their home. Highly successful packages are included. In order to ensure success start up kits also will be delivered at the participant’s home. Session includes demonstration classes by experts, practical shows, doubt clearance provision etc.
Mushroom farming training: Mushroom is both nutritional and medicinal (neutraceutical); the balanced food; farming can be done in small spaces; not labour intensive or time consuming- soft crop. Anybody can do. Online classes will equip the learners to do mushroom cultivation in their home wherever it is.
Training for Organic Farming in Grow bags: Vegetables, tubers and spices can be grown in grow bags without using any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Grow bags can be placed on terrace or balcony of a flat. The session covers all about organic farming in grow bags.
Poultry farming training: Egg and chicken meat are preferable daily requirement in many families. However rearing chicks at home is impractical in most of the modern houses, simply because of its foul smell and difficulties in open rearing. TIES have developed two packages (hi tech & back yard form) to rear poultry in cages, avoiding foul smell and management practices. The classes will cover everything on these techniques. Fish farming at home: The programme offers training on edible fishes that can be grown at household levels. The techniques to make economically cheap ponds, fish varieties, rearing methods etc. Waste management at home and office: Provides easy to practice packages and techniques for waste management homes including composting solutions and biogas techniques. Reuse and recycle techniques also will be practically demonstrated.
Bee keeping: class is on honey bee rearing in boxes, even in urban households with 4-5 cent land only. The training focuses on the farming on Indian honey bee. Techniques of rearing, hive management and making by products out of honey and wax also will be covered.
Hand on Training on Statistical Analysis (Using packages WASP & OPSTAT): Researchers and students are in bear need of statistical analysis tools. Renowned experts take classes on statistical design and analysis with practical sessions on popular open software packages.
